We start our trip by heading south through Chicago to the old truck stop town of McLean, and then through the coalmining area of Illinois along the Pontiac Trail before entering the Illinois state capital Springfield for the night.

Woke early this morning to thunder, lightning and a torrent! After 3 magnificent Chicago days we get this.
We dutifully rose and packed, meeting downstairs at 8am. With close attention to the radar (Hydro loves this crap) we sat and waited. Behold, the rain stopped and we prepared to leave about 10.30. Wet weather gear on! Bikes started and we moved off – no one stalled or dropped it! The going was slow out of Chicago and made more difficult cos we didn’t know the road rules. Ah, wise heads prevail.
We passed the starting point of Route 66 on Adams Street and headed off down the highway, south of Chicago (lives a man named Leroy Brown). After an hour we pulled over and removed the wet weather gear. Skies clearing. Leader Gary (“Bear”) tells us our riding formation is crap. Bring it in close boys and stagger formation. Righto then.
Lunch at Pete’s Pancake place (no Michelin hats here). Someone had a Reuben? (note, decided Max looks like Ruben Kincaid from Partridge Family). We rode on and had various stops at curious little places selling souvenirs. The highlight was Atlanta, Illinois. A step back into the 50’s. A handful of people but a quaint and pretty town.
Arrived Springfield about 7pm. Everyone tired but euphoric. A quick beer in the car park, calls to the Foxettes and then to dinner at Smokey Bones. Meat and steamed vegetables consumed.
