Gallop to Williams, Arizona 230 miles

After entering Arizona, we roar our Harleys through Holbrook, the Petrified Forest, a fossilised prehistoric forest of gigantic trees that has been unearthed by erosion. As we continue further west we pass the old “Jackrabbit Trading Post”, and stop off at the corner in Winslow Arizona. One last stop at Bellemont to see the Ëasy Rider Set” and head on to the old western town of Williams, gateway to the Grand Canyon.

Left the El Rancho at 8.30 this morning. First stop was the New Mexico/Arizona border, deep into Indian territory now. The Indian lifestyle from the road seems to be reduced to little ‘trading posts’ selling jewellery & rugs. We rode onto the Painted Desert & Petrified Forest. It’s an amazing landscape, very lunar. Tree trunks lie on the ground and have crystallized. Max found the very rock where he was in a photo when he was five. He recreated the photo with artistic direction from Sean.

After a couple of hours in the National Park, we headed to Winslow Arizona. We had lunch and then rode to ‘the corner’ to record ‘Take It Easy’. Bear produces a giant guitar! It seems like everyone in Winslow came out to watch. The voices were sweet and the choreography sharp. In short, we were amazing!

We left Winslow and headed for Williams, the gateway to the Grand Canyon. Most of the riding today is on Motorway which is tough – trucks, wind, speed. Getting used to it now. As we approach Williams, the country becomes like snow country. One final stop at the site of a scene from ‘Easy Rider’.

Arrived Williams about 5.30. Staying at the Ramada, very nice. Dinner at the Hotel – magnificent steaks & ribs. Live music also, an old dude who sang our requests and had a good laugh with us. A wonderful day.

Luxury! A day in the Grand Canyon. Hydro, Lewy & Boxy, took off for an early morning ride to some of Hydro’s old haunting grounds to Sedona and the base of Humphreys Peak. Whilst trying to express the joy of this trip down memory lane ……… we are not a support group! That’s the end of that!

The rest of us took it easy this morning. We left the hotel at 10.45 for a 50 mile ride to the Canyon. First stop was the airport for a helicopter ride over the Canyon. No words or photos will do justice to the visual imagery. We were left to ride the South Rim for a couple of hours. We outdid the Japs for photos on this occasion. After exhausting all possible positions on the bike, Singo discovered the ‘reclining reverse mount’. We were in zen with nature. Max & Singo led the charge home at extreme pace! Exhilarating!

Dinner again tonight at the hotel with the cowboy dude singing songs again. There’s not a lot to do in Williams. Apparent weariness overcoming the Foxes. We raged until 9.30.
