The day starts with a terrible breakfast. Singo raging about the absence of bacon & eggs. We depart our Nordic-esque accommodation following 8.30 briefing. It is overcast & cold and rain threatens. We held our breath as Mike opened his pannier to reveal appropriately Grey wet weather gear. The pink, green & purple number from the US trip has been dispensed with. A chaotic short ride around Honningsvåg & check out the Boknafisk. “Boknafisk (either from saami boahkkeguolli or Norwegian bokna “half dry”) is a variant of stockfish and is unsalted fish partially dried by sun and wind on drying flakes (‘hjell’) or on a wall. The most common fish used for boknafisk is cod. If herring is used, the dish is called boknasild. Boknafisk is mostly associated with Northern Norway, but it is eaten along the entire Norwegian coast down to Bergen.” Travelled 100 kms to Oldersfjord – cheesecake & latte. The very athletic Mika served us and invited us to the local Boknafisk Fish Slappers dance. (https://youtu.be/IhJQp-q1Y1s) “Sorry, we’re burning daylight, gotta go.”

A quick drive to Alta & lunch at Stakeriet. The lovely Agnetha served us and invites us to Nordic Women’s Reindeer Herding Assoc. dinner & dance. “Love to but gotta meet the Hurtigruten.”After lunch, we attended the rock carvings museum. Expensive so we carved “Gibbo was here” and left. We are now travelling west and following the water. The roads are excellent quality and we race through the curves, except Boxy who has converted his bike to rain mode and, dropping off the pace, was not seen again for a few hours. We met Lizi at Øksfjord as the ‘Hurtigruten’ pulled in.

The crowd on the boat were amused as she was greeted by her 7 husbands, one for each day of the week. We return Lizi to the prison ship and head off for our next destination, Sørstraumen. We are up in the snow and it’s cold. The views are magnificent. It’s been a big day. We head to our hotel in Sorkjosen. Tired but exhilarated after another great day on the road. After dinner, watching Russia v Croatia. Hydro is sitting with a lovely Norwegian family and doesn’t shut up. They pretend they are interested in his fishing stories & have presented him with some dried fish (refer Boknafisk).Note: all accounts of events are generally factual but do not necessarily reflect reality.
