Started the day with a sleigh ride and then off to Nordkapp, most northerly point of Europe. The briefing meeting was succinct. Russ, as back up navigator to Hydro, and having spent months preparing, has admitted that his system has collapsed and he can be of no further use. Looking very forlorn he comments, “I’m just no good at multi tasking.”
The ride this morning is through flat land but the road is gently meandering which makes for great riding at pace. Stop at the Sami Cultural Park for a break and then onto Lakselv for lunch. This afternoon we set off for Nordkapp. The first 2 hours we are riding north beside Porsangei Fjord. The road curves around the base of low hills. It is a fast run with little traffic on the road. There are a number of tunnels cutting through, the longest is 7kms. Cold & wet inside. Scenery is magnificent. Small villages hug the peninsulas jutting into the water. The deer are all over the road.
The last 15kms up to Nordkapp is a long winding road through barren mountains with glimpses of the North Sea. We stop at the top for some photos. The riding today has been one of the best. We understand that we have copped great conditions. Typically, it’s windy, cold & raining up here .Back down to our hotel. There is a crisis. The only wine available in the hotel is Hardy’s Cask, red & white. We have brought some of our own so the ‘stash’ of illicit wine & whiskey is unloaded while we watch Belgium v Brazil with a bunch of Germans. Gibbo has gone wandering after dinner & imprisoned by the local Sami.
