Chefchaouen to Fes – 3 May 2023 (262kms)

Breakfast on the terrace overlooking the largely indigo Chefchouen. Weather is fine for our ride today.
The roads meander above broad valleys of well laid out green & yellow fields. They curve beautifully but as rough as guts. Bouncing around on uneven surfaces and overtaking can be precarious.
As we ride we observe sad old donkeys and groups of women who look expressionless. Kids give us the two finger
in a nice way (if they are under 10 years). Men carrying bundles of grass on their shoulders going nowhere and on hillsides, hanging onto ropes while tilling the barren dirt. Rural
at its best.
Stop for coffee & strong smell of weed. Men sitting around smoking & drinking cofffee. Saying nothing. Think we’re getting high??
Time to go. Hanna encourages “Myway Mike” to start preparing 10 mins in advance of everyone else. He often seems distracted?
The topography now changes. Pine forests and cool air. Leaving those behind we trek across the mountains through one poor village after another. It’s about survival. One chap who wandered into the road was almost collected by Russ. Only skilled aversion riding saved that bloke. All we see is men huddled together doing…..nothing. Paradox. The beautifully laid out fields in the valleys (rows of Olive trees & terraced hills) versus shitty towns. Above my pay grade to understand how this country works (or doesn’t).
We decided not to stop for lunch. The best we can find are grotty petrol stations. With squat toilets. Quick exit is a good exit. Stopped for a soft drink before the run into Fes.
The final hour was flat and fast (allowing for the traffic). The roads are all two lanes so overtaking is an essential skill set.
We arrived in Fes about 4 and are staying high above the old Medina at Hotel Merinides.
Tonight dinner was at Cafe Fez Restaurant in the Medina. It only took 3 locals to find it! Gibster looking particularly colourful tonight.
Tomorrow is a rest day which we are looking forward to.
