Springfield to Rolla, Missouri 200 miles

Today we continue our ride further south, cross the state line into Missouri and head towards St. Louis. As we enter Missouri you will soon be reminded that this is the state where the forest meets the prairie and the Mississippi River meets the Missouri River. We head for the Mississippi River and visit the famous “Chain of Rocks Bridge” and we will make at stop at Miramec Caverns en route. The day ends in Rolla, the gateway to Mark Twain National Forest.

A mild day suited for riding. After the regular ‘rider meeting’ pep talk we mounted the bikes and to the cry of Bear, “Let’s Ride!”, we rode away. A couple of wobbles at low speed but generally we have enough control of our beasts.

A ride through lush green countryside took us to Carlinville, a quaint little town with a square. We were met by some ‘mighty fine folks’, a welcoming committee of 3. Br. Spencer was the first to engage this group as he’s smoother than the rest of us. We bought some pins, coffee and corn pipes (Lewy & Boxy) and departed with an enthusiastic send off from our new friends. I wonder what they do for the rest of the day?

Picked up Richo on the way and some off us now stripped down to t-shirts and vests. Freedom! Stopped at the Chain of Rocks Bridge on the Mississippi (the big muddy) for some photos. We were now in Missouri. Further stops in the afternoon at the Route 66 museum and the Meramac Caves (hideout of Jesse James). Photo of the backdoor is attached. Goal achieved. No ‘back door’ jokes worthy of reciting.

A final hour into Rolla. Dinner at the ‘all u can eat buffet’ but the Foxes are determined. We want broccoli and greens with our huge ribs, steaks, waffles and syrup! Drinks after dinner in the Redneck carpark outside our rooms and bed at a reasonable hour. We are here to ride!!

Today, the ride was wonderful – perfect weather, prairie scenery (u know, green grass, white houses) and our formation (staggered) was much improved. This is the bible belt! Please note, all Harley bells attached to bikes.
