Tromso to Katokeino 422kms

After Breakfast, the anticipation is palpable. The briefing with Domenico takes place at 8.30. Hydro informs him of the route and places of interest. Co-ordinates are confirmed. Portrait shots are taken and it’s time to go. However, the takeoff is a debacle as is usual for the start of a Foxes Tour. We end up leaving the hotel and at the first turn, find ourselves passing and giving way to each other on the roundabout. Hydro, which way??

Finally, the ride out of Tromsø is spectacular. Rugged snow capped mountains, rising up from lakes, piercing horizontal sheets of low cloud. The riding however, is frustrating. Foxes tend to operate on the edge, particularly Gibbo. It appears that Norway has over invested in speed cameras. Boxy is particularly worried about being fined as they are based on net wealth. After a couple of hours we cross into Finland. Mike gets the wobbles and stops without warning. His recent affection for Finland is distracting as he demands a photo with his adopted country. No more speed limits so we are away at pace. We have all transitioned with skill to the road bikes. At some point we then cross momentarily into Sweden. Nothing for us here, except photos, so we left. Russ has gone back to old habits and throws himself down for photo opps.

We have covered 422 kms today. The roads are good and we’ve stopped a few times to allow the herds of deer to cross or run down the road. The weather is alternately overcast & clear, but cold. We arrive at our destination, Kautekeino around 4pm. Route 66 established the tradition of a car park beer at the end of a days ride. We continue that tradition. Mosquitoes swarming so inside to the bar for a Scandinavian G&T (Brockmans Gin & Nordic Berries). After dinner, Deer Stew & Brussel Sprouts, those still standing retired to the Sami TeePee on site to summon their spiritual ancestors over a fire, music & ceremonial wine which Hydro kept baptising himself in??
