Tulsa to Weatherford, Oklahoma 175 miles

Here is where the pavement of RT66 follows the contour of the land as if it’s always been there. We cover a part of the old west’s Indian country between Tulsa and Oklahoma City. We head west through El Reno, over the Mile- Long Bridge, near Bridgeport and into Weatherford, the heart and soul of route 66 country. Stop at Chandler for the “Route 66 Interpretive Centre”, Seba Station for the Bike Museum, Arcadia to see Mr Sam at the Big Round Barn, before the ride into Weatherford.

Rider meeting this morning again focused on storm & tornado conditions. This would effect our route planning as we only discovered last night that when a storm occurs, Hydro likes to sit in a chookhouse and drink scotch. We undertook to do our best to be near a chookhouse if the rain hits i.e best wishes to Chardonnay and the other chooks from all of us. Let’s Ride!

First stop this morning was the Harley shop to buy more essential clobber – boot straps. We were quickly into our wet weather gear and struggling to see where we were going. Tested our limited abilities on these big bikes but we’re up for it. Thankfully we only got a short ‘biker shower’ and were able to revert to normal riding gear. However, the winds remain ferocious.

Our next stop today was the National Guard Building, Oklahoma. The first black man inducted was Lewy’s namesake, Burton ‘LeeLee’ Lewis. More pins and patches to acquire for the vests. Next stop was the Bicycle Museum – more patches.

On to the Big Red Round Barn. Well this was a surprise! We met Mr Sam who gave us a history of the barn. He is a 90 year old leprechaun with a lot of energy. He regaled us with lots of stories and was hilarious. Better buy another pin for the vest.

Our last stop of the day was a truckstop in Cherokee country where we did a stupid photo with a model buffalo. The final hour of the ride today was a hoot. All of it along the original narrow Route 66. With very little traffic we hit it hard and had a ball.

Arrived Weatherford at 6pm. Beer in the carpark and quick dinner at the Diner. Everyone stuffed after the difficult conditions of the last 2 days so sleep beckons. We are being led brilliantly by Bear and the party rolls on.
