Well the time has arrived. The final parade that we have been training for. We dress up in our best finery (crusty biker), final rider meeting (remember boys, bring it in tight in LA so we don’t break up the group), and depart Victorville. 90 miles to go! I can say without hesitation, it was the worst 90 miles ever!!! We hurtled down freeways with giant cracks, trucks flying past us with feet to spare. Stopped for a refuel and relief was obvious. But no, Bear tells us it gets worse! Well it didn’t.

We cruised into Santa Monica Pier with some minor hold ups. We’ve done it! The end of Route 66. We had the photos taken at the official sign by ourselves and strangely a lot of other people. One bloke stopped his car in the middle of the road and took a photo of us.

Lunch at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co on the pier. Then an hour to kill so we had a caricature drawn for posterity (to be hung in the clubhouse). Our final remount and off to return the bikes. This was bad. We crawled for an hour on the freeway at about 5-10mph, rarely stopping to put our feet down. We needed every skill we had to stay on the bikes. They were burning, so were our legs from the engine heat. Try staying straight on a bike at that speed. Anyway, as he story goes, the Foxes always win in the end.

After signing off the bikes, we jumped on our bus (with a variety of beers) and headed to the Hilton Hotel where Sarge looked after us in fine style. Farewell dinner tonight in a private room with Bear and Mark (anointed honorary Silver Foxes) and the ‘dirty poms’ who we have become quite attached to. We received our Certificates of Achievement – which it certainly was! Tomorrow – las Vegas by convertible Mustangs.
