Met at Princes Street at 7am for a coffee @ pre-tour planning (i.e. reckon itll rain? Yeah…nah. Any idea how we get there?). Janelle turned up with her dog to farewell us. She is a true groupie.
The starting line-up was Andrew G (yes really), Andy R, Mike, Boxy, Lewy, Tony & Singo. Apologies from Hydro & Russ.
Straight up the expressway to Wauchope in hot conditions. True to form, we arrived in chaos (all taking different turns – Hydro would have been proud) finally regrouping for lunch in the Pink cafe. Lewy & Singo leading a yoga demonstration. Well, Lewy was lying down really. They were however, unable to inspire the rest of the group who tucked into burgers & chips.
Up the Oxley Highway to Walcha. Magnificent ride through the Cottan-Bimbang National Park. In excess of 400 turns through the mountains.
Walcha (/wlk/) is a town at the south-eastern edge of the Northern Tablelands, New South Wales, Australia. Walcha is located 425 kilometres by road from Sydney at the intersection of the Oxley Highway and Thunderbolts Way. The Apsley River passes through the town to tumble over the Apsley Falls before joining the Macleay River further on. Originally the river caused flooding in the town prior to a levee bank being constructed and saving the town from more floods. At the 2016 census, Walcha had a population of 1,451 people.[1]
Arrived at our salubrious digs, the Walcha Motel, about 3.00. We have been transported back to Family Holidays in the 1970s!
Every room has a view! Hows the serenity? So much serenity.
Across to the IGA to load up on Gin & Tonic & a very large cucumber!! We forgot to buy the cucumber. Back to AndrewGs for drinks and a chat.
Dinner at the Commercial Hotel. At this stage, we missed Russ finance skills. Splitting the bill & adjusting for other expenses seemed to take an inordinately long time. Without Hydro, we were unable to remember where we had been, obtain details of the topography or ascertain what tomorrow will be like.
Notwithstanding an Aviation Show in town, there is no one around.
Up early on a crisp still morning. Breakfast at Walcha Royal cafe, a very curious place. An old tool shed (Singo), old bikes (Tony), metal tree (AndyG)……& solid breakfast.
The ride this morning is across the undulating plains to the Lookout up on Baxters Ridge, overlooking the beautiful Manning River Valley.
Then, onto Gloucester. Beautiful hilly country but unexpectedly, poorly maintained roads. Slow down. Lunch break at Gloucester.
We reFuel at Raymond Terrace then a scramble home down the expressway.
Perfectly executed. Thanks to Gibbo for organising another Great Fox Adventure.
