Weatherford to Amarillo, Texas 175 miles

We rise early for our journey into Texas full of prickly pear and into the “panhandle”. Another Museum to see at Clinton and the gas up at one of the original gas stations of the old Route 66 at Shammrock and then on to McLean. We ride up to Amarillo, up in the northern Panhandle and head for the 72oz steak!

We left Weatherford under promising conditions and made our way across some pretty ordinary terrain, very flat and barren. The old Route 66 is 2 lanes running beside the freeway which we ride, bouncing along at pace on a deteriorating track. Today emphasises the saying, “it’s all about the journey”. Middle America is a desolate place. Our first stop of the day was the Route 66 Museum, a terrific overview of the roads halcyon days of the 1930’s to 1950’s. More photos and pin buying! Next stop was a photo at a very big sign and after, an opportunity for some naked riding (well, helmets off anyway). Everyone loves posing for the cameras. You’d be proud of us girls!

Lunch today was a good old fashion picnic (sans rugs) sitting in a dry dusty park. It is hot and very windy. Didn’t hang around too long. When we are ready to move, we let Bear know by revving the bikes and blowing horns. Music to a biker’s ear! Somewhere along the way we leave Oklahoma and cross the Texan border. The landscape doesn’t improve. An hour on, the fingers are getting restless so stopped at the U Drop Inn for a photo opportunity. A Classic art déco restoration. A bit further on we stopped at the Great Plains lookout. You can see for yourself.

The final run into Amarillo was tough, 40 miles of motorways, 85mph and buffeting winds. The Foxes have again proven they are not to be taken lightly. The post-ride therapy was helpful.

We arrived at this very colourful hotel called the BIG TEXAN STEAK RANCH. Car park beers and then across to the restaurant to assist Lewy take on a 72oz steak. He was sat at a raised table so everyone could gawk at him eating. But he was a popular contestant and made many friends that night. For the record, he got through 52oz. An early night for the sensible Foxes (most but not all) with a big day tomorrow.
