From Williams we ride further west on the old “Mother Road”, which is bending north here, coming down from the highlands, through the Indian town of Peach Springs into Kingman – considered to be the “Heart of Historic Route 66”. As we continue we get to the old western town of Oatman and finally to Needles, our stop for the night.

To quote Sarge, “a trip that just keeps giving!” Set off in fine conditions this morning. Most riding through desert this morning. Huge flat brown prairies rising into hills which always seem so far away. We see a dust storm in the distance. Hardly a cow to be seen. Our riding skills are peaking as we near the end. The Foxes have perfected the two fingered salute (V formation pointing to the ground) to passing bikers and use it liberally.
Our first stop is Seligman, a town which exists only for Route 66 memorabilia. We have breakfast at Lilo’s and then a wander around this odd little town. Elvis is there! It is dry and hot and we are back to white t-shirts for riding. On we go through the desert stopping at a couple of spots, Hackberry (nudey pictures from 1972 magazines in the bathroom) & Cool Springs (which it is not) to take photos of the surrounds and check out the souvenirs! The Landscape now changes and we are into the barren hills. We stop at the Harley dealer in Kingman and then, crossing the border over the Colorado River into California, onto Needles. This is the best riding yet. We wind through the hills leaning through the sharp corners, stopping at Dead Man’s curve (where many cars came off this road when it was dirt and rock) and Oatman. You’re kidding, donkeys roaming all over the main street of this tiny western town. Stop for an hour.
The ride into Needles is a cracker. Straight to the pool for beers to slate the thirst followed by a fine dinner at the Hotel. Sang songs with Annetta (who looks and sounds like Tina Turner or Aretha Franklin) in the bar after.
